The .eu top-level domain name (TLD) is an extension that represents the European Union. For companies that conduct business in the European Union and individuals who want to reach the growing number of Internet users there, .eu domain names are a good investment. Registering a .eu domain name gives you regional recognition and an easy-to-manage Web presence.

Who can register .eu domain names?

Registration of .eu domain names is limited to individuals or companies from countries in the European Union.

Which registry controls .eu domain names?

EURid is the registry for .eu domain names.

For how long can I register .eu domain names?

The minimum registration length for .eu domain names is one year, and the maximum registration length is 10 years.

When do .eu domain names renew?

Your .eu domain name expires on the last day of the month in which you registered it. For example, if you register a .eu domain name for two years on Jan. 10, 2011, then it expires on Jan. 31, 2013.

The renewal date depends on whether you set the domain name to auto-renew or manually renew.

We first attempt auto-renewal 10 days prior to the domain name's expiration date. If the renewal attempt fails, we re-attempt renewal five days prior to the domain name's expiration date. If the second attempt fails, we make a final attempt on the domain name's expiration date.

For example: Your .eu domain name expires on Jan. 31. If your domain name does not renew automatically, you can renew it manually by that date. For automatic renewals, we attempt to renew the domain name on Jan. 21, Jan. 26, and Jan. 31.

Due to time zone differences, registry updates to your .eu domain name occur very early in the day. If you decide to manually renew your domain name, we recommend that you do so prior to its expiration date.

If we cannot auto-renew the domain name and you do not manually renew it by its expiration date, you can attempt to recover it, and there might be a fee to do so. See Recovering Expired Domain Names for instructions.

Can I trade my .eu domain names?

Yes, however the process for trades (registrant contact updates) is unique for .eu domain names. EURid charges a trade fee, prior to the update, regardless of whether the domain name is changing accounts.

Use the information below to process trades with or without account changes. You can also refer to About .eu Domain Names, Updating Your Domain Name Contact Information and Moving a Domain Name Out of Your Account.

Can I transfer .eu domain names to my account with you?

You can transfer a .eu domain name to us. However, the transfer process is unique to the European Registry of Internet Domain Names (EURid).

NOTE: Due to registry limitations, we cannot add a free year of registration to .eu domain names that you transfer to us.

When you purchase a .eu domain name transfer from us, we notify EURid of your request, and we will send transfer IDs to the email address on file in your account with us. We will also send the authorization code to the registrant contact's email address as it displays in the Whois database. (If you need to update your registrant contact's email address, contact your current registrar.)

You must authorize the transfer in your account with us within 40 days or your request expires. The sooner you authorize your transfer, the sooner it completes.
