Patching Your VPS or Dedicated Server
To protect yourself from security vulnerabilities, it is incredibly important to patch your server regularly. Developing a monthly or weekly habit of performing this simple task can save you a lot of grief and hassle later on.
NOTE: Assisted Service Plan customers do not need to patch their own servers.
The process to patch your server depends on what operating system your server uses:
Fedora or Cent OS
- SSH to your server.
- Type
su -
, and then press Enter to gain root access. - Type
yum clean all
, and then press Enter. - Type
yum update
, and then press Enter.
Ubuntu
- SSH to your server.
- Type
su -
, and then press Enter to gain root access. - Type
apt-get upgrade
, and then press Enter.
Windows Server 2008
- Connect to your server using Remote Desktop.
- From the Start menu, select Control Panel.
- Click Windows Update.
- Click Check for Updates, and then complete the steps to update your server.
