Why am I getting 552 bounceback errors?
Generally, 552 bounceback errors occur when outbound emails from our servers have the characteristics of spam. But you're reading this article, and that signals you use email responsibly. So let's get this fixed.
Something in your message triggered our spam filters — often reports from your recipients — and that flagged the message as an unsolicited email. Once senders get certain reputation based on reports, their messages trip our filters more often.
To get started, here are a few things, if you've been flagged before, that can get the attention of our spam filters:
- Domain names and URLs
- Email addresses
- Phone numbers
- Embedded Images
Next, take a look any distro lists you use. Make sure the recipients on those lists opted in, meaning they confirmed wanting to receive email from you. If they didn't, they might've sent us reports about messages they got from you.
You should always make sure you're following the sending practices outlined by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. You can find those here. Another helpful resource is a .PDF guide from the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group — a collective of service providers and vendors — which you can download here.
If you're still having problems with 552 bounceback errors, please contact Customer Support. We can work on getting your messages through our filters. To help speed up the process, before you call please round up these materials:
- A copy of the original message
- Any attachments with the message
- A copy of the bounceback error message
The easiest way for us to review your message is if you send it in .EML format. For instructions on doing that with our Web-Based Email, please see this Help article. You can also get information about other common bounceback errors in this Help article.
We know bounceback errors are frustrating. But they help ensure using the Internet is a pleasant experience for everyone. Thanks for your patience.
