Dealing with Email Bouncebacks

Print this Article
Last Updated: October 21, 2017 12:53 PM

When an email is not able to be sent or delivered, the mail server automatically generates a bounceback message that describes the exchange. This includes the exact reason why the failure occurred. Once you have the bounceback, take a minute to review the message. The first part of the message will look like this:

We're sorry. There's a problem with the e-mail address(es) you're trying to send to. Please verify the address(es) and try again. If you continue to have problems, please contact Customer Support at (480) 624-2500.

64.202.166.12 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 553 sorry, relaying denied from your location [64.202.189.6] (#5.7.1)
Giving up on 64.202.166.12.

Bounceback Error

Cause of Error

Resolution
552 The message was rejected because it contains prohibited virus or spam content The email message contains a link, attachment, or pattern caught by our filters as spam or a possible virus. Remove the content causing the error.
554 The message was rejected because it contains prohibited virus or spam content The email message contains a link, attachment, or pattern caught by our filters as spam or a possible virus. Remove the content causing the error.
554 Message Refused/ 554 Denied (Mode : Normal) The email client settings are invalid, there maybe an invalid character in recipients' email address, or a computer antivirus or network firewall is blocking the email. If you have your email set up on Outlook, Click More Settings, and then Outgoing Server tab. Make sure that My outgoing server (SMPTP) requires authentication and Use same settings as my incoming mail server are selected. Make sure recipients' email doesn't have invalid characters. Consider temporarily disabling antivirus or firewall and send from Webmail.
Sorry, I couldn't find any host named coolexample.com (#5.1.2) The domain name is invalid or MX records are invalid. Make sure you entered the correct email address.
Child status 100...The email message could not be delivered because the users mailfolder is full. Your mailbox is full. Delete messages to free up space or add more space to your account.
Sorry, I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection. (#4.4.1) I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long. Generally, this means the receiving server is not accepting our connection attempt when we send the email. These errors normally take 3 days to bounce, as we keep trying to connect to the receiving server. Contact the mail provider you are attempting to send to for assistance. They might be able to tell you why their server is refusing the connection.
Child Status 100... The email message could not be delivered because the message is looping. The receiving server is already in the header of the email, indicating the message in an endless loop. Review the emails in question (both sending and receiving) and look for automatic forwarding or auto-reply. If both accounts have auto replies or automatic forwarding this normally causes a loop.
550 5.7.1 SPF unauthorized mail is prohibited. (In reply to DATA command) The domain on the sending email address has an SPF record and the sending email server is not authorized to send email from the domain due to the SPF record in place. Modify the current SPF record to include the server you are trying to send from or remove the SPF record from the domain.
Child status 100...The email message could not be delivered because there are no users here by that name. The email address is not setup in our system. Make sure you entered the correct email address.
Sorry, I couldn't find a mail exchanger or IP Address. The domain doesn't have valid MX Records, an IP Address, or there was an issue when doing the DNS lookup at the time the email was sent. Verify that you are sending to the correct domain. If your DNS isn't valid you will need to fix the DNS issue before you resend the email.
