Creating Transfer Templates in Premium DNS
Premium DNS saves you time by letting you create templates that contain the DNS records for your domain names. With this feature, you can create transfer templates to keep your zone files intact when you transfer domain names to us. If you set up a transfer template with the DNS for your domain name(s) and then initiate a transfer to us, we set up your DNS before the transfer process completes so your website(s) stay online.
You can create two types of transfer templates:
- TransferIn — If you have a standard zone file that you apply to more than one of your domain names, you can create this type of template and use it as many times as you like.
- TransferIn_domainname — If you have a unique zone file for a specific domain name, you can create this type of template, where domainname is your actual domain name. After you use it to transfer your domain name to us, you can delete it or change its name to use it for another domain name.
NOTE: If you do not have Premium DNS, you can still keep your zone files intact when you transfer domain names to us by setting up Off-site DNS for them prior to initiating the transfer. See Managing Domain Names with Off-site DNS for more information.
To Create Transfer Templates in Premium DNS
- Log in to your Account Manager.
- Click Premium DNS.
- Next to Premium DNS, click Launch.
- Go to the Templates tab.
- Click Create New Template.
- In the field, type one of the following:
- TransferIn — Use this option if you want to apply the template to multiple domain names.
- TransferIn_domainname — Use this option if you want to apply the template to a specific domain name. Replace domainname with your actual domain name. For example, if your domain name is coolexample.com, type TransferIn_coolexample.com.
- Click Add Record, select the Record type you want to add, complete the on-screen fields, and then click OK. For more information about adding zone records, see Managing DNS for Your Domain Names.
- Repeat the previous step for any DNS records you want to add to your template.
- Click Save Template.
- Click OK twice.
NOTE: If there is an error with a record, we do not save it. Instead, a red exclamation point displays. Hover over it to view the error message.
- Initiate a domain name transfer from our website. For more information, see Transferring Domain Names to Us. When the transfer completes, we apply the template to the zone file (domain name).
