Enabling Joomla! Search Engine Friendly URLs
NOTE: Before you start, click here to see which version of the FTP File Manager is in your Control Panel. This help article applies to the Classic FTP File Manager. If you are using the New FTP File Manager, see Enabling Joomla! Search Engine Friendly URLs
Joomla! lets you use Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URLs for your website, which can help improve your search engine ranking.
Because of our hosting accounts' configurations, though, there are a few more steps required to enable the option successfully. You must enable RewriteBase
in your hosting account's .htaccess
file.
To Enable Joomla! SEF URLs
- Log in to your Joomla! control panel (http://coolexample.com/administrator, where coolexample.com is the domain name and directory where you installed Joomla!).
- From the Site menu, select Global Configuration.
- In the SEO Settings section, from the Search Engine Friendly URLs field, select Yes, and then click Save.
- Using your hosting account's editor, edit your account's
.htaccess
file. - Locate the line of text
# RewriteBase /and delete the
#
from the line of text. - Save your changes.
